Yahya Mahamid
Yahya Mahamid is an Israeli activist, IDF soldier and speaker from the city of Umm Al Fahm. Yahya grew up with a negative view of Israel and the Jewish people. After realizing that he was misled, He decided to join the IDF as a combat infantry soldier, he gained a deeper understanding of Israel and its people and now works to empower and integrate youth from Israel’s Arab minority into society. Yahya is a vocal advocate against anti-Semitism and misinformation about Israel. Yahya is currently pursuing a B.A. in Education at Ono Academic College.

I was at the Dead Sea over the weekend, trying to relax a bit from all the rocket attacks. I wanted to fill up my tank and thought there would definitely be a gas station near the hotel area at the Dead Sea. According to Waze, there should have been one, but because the signal wasn’t great, I started driving—and then realized there was no gas station, and I had no fuel left in the car. I was completely stranded in the middle of nowhere.![]()

Suddenly, a young guy pulled over next to me and asked what happened. I explained that I was stuck...![]()
This man drove 40 minutes to a gas station, brought me 10 bottles of fuel, and refused to take a single shekel from me!![]()

And not only that—he bought me a drink and followed behind me all the way to the gas station to make sure I was okay.![]()

I didn’t dare ask out loud. Instead, I wrote. Words in a green notebook, short lines of thought. I don’t know whether I feared the answers more than the questions, but I felt something inside me breaking open.![]()
Society gave me all kinds of labels — Arab, Muslim, Palestinian, Arab-Israeli, 48 Arab. But none of them felt like home.![]()
At 16, I received a blue ID card. It said “Israeli.” I trembled. Not from fear — from relief.![]()
For the first time, someone gave me a label that felt close to something real. Not political, not ideological — just a physical sense of belonging. To this land I walk on, to this street I cross every day.![]()
At 19, I chose to study communications. I wanted to tell the stories I was never told. To show that other side — the one that wasn’t broadcast when I was a child.![]()
That same year, I changed my name. I became “Ella.” No longer a name chosen for me, but one I chose for myself. Short hair, no hijab, a small apartment — and a new beginning.![]()
It felt like stepping out of the cave, seeing the light — and knowing I would never go back inside.![]()
When I enlisted in the army, I did it quietly. It wasn’t just service — it was a declaration:![]()
That I belong.![]()
That I choose.![]()
That I won’t apologize.![]()
I joined the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. Not a fighter with a rifle — a fighter with words. In front of a camera, in front of journalists, in front of myself. Slowly, I became an officer. I made it to the screen. My face spoke to the world.![]()
And every time I stood in front of the camera, I felt that 12-year-old girl behind me, smiling, saying:![]()
“You knew.”![]()
The road was full of walls — anger, slander, hate from all directions. But I saw the glow in my mother’s eyes when I spoke a clear, proud, brave sentence in Arabic on live television.![]()
Some memories never left me.![]()
The strawberry fields where my father planted, with wounded hands, the fruits that raised me.![]()
A room with five kids, where I taught myself to dream of a place that had space just for me.![]()
A smile in that photo — colorful shorts, a concrete wall behind me, a small garden.![]()
And each memory — not nostalgia, but a foundation stone.![]()
When people asked what it’s like to be both — I said:![]()
It’s not both.![]()
It’s me.![]()
And the more I searched, the more I realized — my cave wasn’t just a place. It was a mindset.![]()
And the light?![]()
It’s not always blinding.![]()
Sometimes, it simply tells you:![]()
You’re allowed to be you.![]()
You’re allowed to choose your name, your faith, your path, your heart.![]()
Today, when I stop and look back, I see — this wasn’t a journey to convince anyone. It was a journey not to lose myself. To reinvent myself, without fear. To raise a small torch, to light the way for those still afraid to step out.![]()
Because they’re out there. Many of them.![]()

Dare.![]()
There’s light outside.![]()
